Two dolphins were observed near the shoreline of Santa Ponsa, after a reader captured video footage from the land this Tuesday. The calm morning sea provided clear views of the cetaceans moving just off the coast of this popular tourist area, well known for its beaches during summer.

The video shows the dolphins surfacing simultaneously on multiple occasions, their silhouettes visible above the tranquil water. This encounter drew attention from locals and visitors walking along the beach, as such close sightings of dolphins in this area are uncommon.

The presence of dolphins around Mallorca is not unusual, although their proximity to the shore is less frequently recorded. Species such as the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) inhabit the western Mediterranean and sometimes approach coastal waters in search of food.

Another sighting in Ibiza

Two dolphins were spotted around sunset in Sant Antoni de Portmany, off Café del Mar. It is not uncommon to see these cetaceans along the coasts of the Pityusic Islands, as they are native to the Mediterranean Sea.

Marine biodiversity of the Balearics

This type of close encounter underscores the rich marine biodiversity surrounding the Balearic Islands. The natural environment here is recognised as a key asset that requires ongoing conservation efforts. The presence of dolphins near the coast serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining ecological balance in the Mediterranean Sea to allow such events to continue.
