A 78-year-old man died on Tuesday after a controlled burn he had started spread rapidly and affected 1.2 hectares of scrubland in Almallutx, Escorca.
The fire not far from the Gorg Blau reservoir was confirmed shortly before 1pm. Firefighters from Inca and Soller initially couldn't find the man when they arrived, although his vehicle and dog were present. After a search, he was found dead with burns.
The fire was brought under control by 2pm with the assistance of a firefighting helicopter. Once under control, the man was found.
Initial reports suggest he suffered some kind of medical episode, which caused the fire to get out of control and resulted in his death.
Guardia Civil Judicial Police from Inca are in charge of the investigation and are awaiting autopsy results. There were no witnesses to the incident.
