A broken pump pipeline has led to the release of sewage water at the popular Platja Petita in Cala Millor in Mallorca. The incident was reported yesterday afternoon after local residents raised alarms about large amounts of wastewater overflowing onto the promenade and reaching the sea.
Officials from the town hall confirmed this is not the first time a failure of this nature has occurred. "This morning, the company responsible for the canalisation works along the promenade managed to bring the situation under control and stop the discharge," explained council member Pep Servera Leno.
However, as the spillage continued throughout the night, the affected beach area will remain closed to the public for the next two or three days. "Afterwards, we will carry out further water quality tests to ensure the sea is safe for bathing," added Servera.
Servera also noted that the affected pump pipeline is quite old. He highlighted that current ongoing renovation works at the promenade, specifically along section three, have accounted for the replacement of this outdated infrastructure.
