Update: Wave of small boats intercepted in the Balearics: over 127 migrants on board

At least 127 migrants have been intercepted or rescued since early Tuesday morning from six small boats in Formentera and another sighted two miles northeast of Cabrera, south of Mallorca. As reported by the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands, at 4:30 a.m., Maritime Rescue rescued a group of 17 migrants of Maghreb origin aboard a small boat east of the island of Formentera.

At 5 a.m., another 17 people, also of Maghreb origin, were intercepted near the Blue Bar establishment in Formentera after arriving in another boat. Almost an hour later, 26 people of sub-Saharan origin were rescued from a boat two miles northeast of the island of Cabrera, in Mallorca, and a group of 14 migrants of sub-Saharan origin was intercepted at 6:30 a.m. on a boat in Es Ram, Formentera.

Barely half an hour later, at 7 a.m., another 20 people of Maghreb origin were intercepted on the La Mola road, also in Formentera. At 11:00 and 12:10, the Guardia Civil intercepted two other boats in the smaller of the Pitiusas Islands, one with 17 Maghreb migrants on board, in Es Ram, and another with 16 people of sub-Saharan origin in the area of s'Estufador.

According to data from the Government Delegation, 71 migrants of Maghreb origin and 56 of sub-Saharan origin arrived on the Balearic coast on Tuesday. In addition, the Government Delegation reported that last night, at around 9:25 p.m., 10 people of Maghreb origin who had arrived in a boat at Figueretes Beach in Ibiza were intercepted by the National Police.

Yesterday afternoon, Maritime Rescue and the Civil Guard's air and sea services rescued 19 people of Algerian origin from a small boat about two miles east of the island of Cabrera, south of Mallorca.

So far this year, 30 small boats have been located in the Balearic Islands, with a total of 538 migrants, according to EFE's count based on data from the Ministry of the Interior and the Government Delegation. The latest fortnightly report for 2025 from the Ministry of the Interior states that 7,321 people arrived in the Balearic Islands in 401 boats from Algeria throughout the year, representing a 24.5% increase in the number of immigrants and an almost 15% increase in the number of boats compared to 2024
