Palma town hall temporarily closed part of the access stairs to the La Seu viewpoint on Monday afternoon following the detection of a minor shift in the lateral abutments of the stairway leading up to Dalt Murada, adjacent to the Cathedral.
Sources from the town hall explained that "both abutments have small landings on each side as well as two compartments on their interiors." Municipal officials quickly arrived at the site to restrict access to the stairway's sides and partially close off the structure as a precaution.
Palma firefighters shored up the left side of the stairs, when facing the sea, aiming to stabilise the affected section. This particular segment is an architectural addition dating back to the 1950s. The authorities confirmed that "the rest of the surrounding area shows no signs of damage or movement."
According to an official statement, "to ensure continued accessibility, a roughly two-metre-wide passage has been maintained along the stairway, allowing pedestrians to pass safely while the remaining areas stay cordoned off temporarily." The town hall is in the process of preparing a detailed technical report that will guide the necessary repair work for restoring full structural integrity to the affected section."
