A year ago, Pollensa Town Hall introduced a moratorium on the granting of building licences in the Can Berenguer area. The roundabout coming into Pollensa from Puerto Pollensa is known by this name. By the roundabout are traditional businesses - Teixits Vicens, Mestre Paco. The mayor, Martí March, said the moratorium, which received unanimous approval at a council meeting, was "in order to maintain the aesthetic personality of the area". It is an entry point to the town.

This moratorium was partly in response to the announcement that the Mercadona supermarket chain had acquired land in the area. There was also talk about Aldi having an interest.

The town hall is now due to amend the municipal urban plan with the aim of preserving the architectural and landscape character of what was designated as an 'artisan industry' area in 1990. This amendment specifies maximum height of buildings, materials and permitted uses in keeping with the 1990 designation.

There are to be limits to advertising and greater controls of buildings' exterior appearance. Vegetation must be conserved or trees replaced if necessary. This is in order to maintain the harmony of the landscape.

The proposed amendment, approved at the last council meeting, is currently out for public consultation.
