The Tramuntana XXI association, which promotes the traditional values and practices of the mountains, has expressed its rejection of the Council of Mallorca's intention to authorise recreational hunting on public estates in Mallorca and not just in the Tramuntana.
The association believes that allowing hunting with firearms in publicly owned natural areas "is incompatible" with a management model based on safety, conservation, and responsible public use. It points out that these lands, especially in the Tramuntana, are intended for free and open public access, environmental education, fire prevention, and the protection of natural and cultural heritage.
Recreational hunting could create risks for visitors, affect the perception of safety, and disrupt the social use of these areas. The association distinguishes between hunting with firearms and low-impact traditional practices, such as that with wire nets for capturing birds, which it believes is compatible.
It also differentiates between technical wildlife management for ecological reasons, such as that of feral goats, when this adheres to accepted criteria.
Tramuntana XXI emphasises that the Tramuntana Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, requires exemplary management that prioritises public safety, the conservation of biodiversity and the cultural landscape, the compatibility of land uses, and active agroforestry management that contributes to restoring the traditional landscape of rural Mallorca.
