Maritime Rescue assisted 6,310 people in the Balearics in 2025

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Palma, which reports to the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility through the Directorate-General for the Merchant Navy, coordinated the rescue, assistance or search for 6,310 people last year, 29% more than the previous year, in 733 maritime operations. The highest number of incidents was related to recreational boating, accounting for 52%.

Vessels involved: In 2025, 382 recreational boats, 20 merchant ships and 21 fishing boats were involved in maritime incidents in Balearic waters. Irregular immigration in the Balearics: Maritime Rescue coordinated the search for 267 irregular vessels and rescued 4,102 people (60% more than the previous year) in Balearic waters.

Maritime Rescue activity in 2025 throughout Spain: Maritime Rescue coordinated the rescue, assistance or search for 41,387 people (an average of 113 per day) in the 7,347 maritime operations carried out throughout the Spanish search and rescue area of responsibility during 2025. This is the annual report of this Society, which is dependent on the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility through the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy.

Vessels involved in Spain: In 2025, 3,037 recreational vessels, 568 merchant ships and 500 fishing vessels were involved in maritime incidents. Maritime traffic control: Furthermore, the total number of vessels controlled by Maritime Rescue centres in the Traffic Separation Schemes of Fisterra, Tarifa, Cabo de Gata, Eastern and Western Canary Islands, which reinforce safety in areas of heavy maritime traffic, amounts to 154,353 vessels. In addition, 154,030 vessels have been monitored entering and leaving ports where Maritime Rescue carries out this work.

For a cleaner sea: During 2025, Maritime Rescue monitored more than 226 million km2 of sea with its aircraft and satellites, an area equivalent to 447 times the national territory. It also responded to 394 incidents related to the protection of the marine environment.
