We all know that Spain has set a new tourism record, welcoming nearly 96.8 million foreign visitors in 2025, according to figures released by the National Statistics Institute and that was greatly thanks to visitors from the United Kingdom.

According to the data, most visitors to Spain were from the UK (19 million) followed by France (12.7 million) and Germany (12 million) - although the Germans have Mallorca pretty much bought up.
And, it appears that it will be the Germans paying more and the most tourist tax in Mallorca if they continue to dominate the local market.

Today, Wednesday, the PSIB-PSOE Balearic socialist party expressed its confidence that the president of the Balearics, Marga Prohens, will maintain her proposal to increase the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) - tourist tax - and that it will be ratified in the current session of the Balearic Parliament, for which it will have the backing of the Socialists.

This was stated by its parliamentary spokesperson, and former Balearic Minister for Tourism under the previous left-wing government, at a press conference, Iago Negueruela, who recalled that it was Prohens herself who announced the ITS increase during the debate on the Autonomous Community in 2024.

He reported that the Socialists have sent a letter to the President in which they welcome the fact that the PP has finally brought this debate to the Sustainability Committee. Negueruela stated that the PSIB-PSOE will not return to this forum, which it left in the past. ‘Prohens will defend it better than we can, because it is her proposal,’ he added.

The Socialist spokesperson stressed that the ITS increase cannot be considered ‘one of the 600 proposals’ of the Sustainability Committee, as the PP claims, but rather an initiative of the president of the regional government, he insisted. The Spanish tourism sector faces 2026 from a position of strength, with a positive outlook prospects after stabilisation of post-pandemic growth.

In 2025, Spain reaffirmed its global leadership with 97 million international arrivals and record spending of €135 billion, ranking second worldwide. Tourism GDP grew by 2.7% and is expected to maintain a growth rate of around 2.5%-2.7% in the coming years. This scenario reflects a more balanced sector, with clear signs of regional diversification and deseasonalisation, and with emerging segments that boost its added value.
