The death toll from the collision between two trains in Adamuz (Cordoba) has now risen to 41, sources involved in the investigation have told EFE. A total of 39 injured passengers remain in hospital, 13 of whom — including one minor — are in intensive care.

The latest fatality was found beneath the wreckage of the Iryo train, whose final three carriages derailed and caused the accident after colliding with the front of an Alvia train, as confirmed by the regional government of Andalusia.

The Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, stated that three bodies have been located amid the twisted remains of the Alvia train and are expected to be recovered in the coming hours.

Rescue and technical teams continued working throughout the night at the scene of the rail disaster, focusing on installing a large crane to lift the derailed Alvia carriages.

The Iryo train was carrying 317 passengers. It departed Malaga at 6.40 pm bound for Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha station and, shortly after 7.30 pm, its final three carriages derailed, encroaching onto the adjacent track.

A Renfe train travelling on that line towards Huelva subsequently also derailed. The Iryo carriages struck the first two coaches of the Renfe Alvia train, which were violently displaced on impact.
