Iryo train in accident was built in 2022 and inspected just four days before derailment

The section of track had recently been renewed

The Iryo train that derailed on Sunday in Adamuz, in the province of Cordoba, had undergone an inspection just four days earlier, on 15 January, and was built in 2022, the company has said. The incident occurred on the Madrid–Seville high-speed line, on a straight section of track that was renewed last May.

In a statement, Iryo said it is in constant contact with all the authorities involved, including the Ministry of Transport, the infrastructure manager Adif, the Government Delegation, the Andalusian regional government and the local councils of Adamuz and Córdoba. The company thanked emergency services and public bodies for their swift response and for the human and technical resources deployed from the outset.

Iryo said it is fully cooperating with the commission responsible for investigating the accident and will provide all the information required. The company’s chief executive, Fabrizio Favara, travelled to the scene on Sunday night to support teams working on the ground, while the company’s chairman, Carlos Bertomeu, is also making his way to the area.

Spain’s Transport Minister, Óscar Puente, said the circumstances of the derailment were “rare and difficult to explain”, noting that the train was newly built and that the section of track had recently been renewed. Iryo later confirmed that the train was manufactured in 2022 and that its most recent inspection took place on 15 January.

The company has cancelled its planned participation in the Fitur international tourism fair. It has also announced free ticket changes and cancellations for affected passengers, and has set up a helpline for passengers and their families on 900 001 402.
