At least 21 people have died and more than 100 people have been injured after two high-speed trains derailed in the municipality of Adamuz (Córdoba).

The crash happened at 7.45pm on Sunday. It involved a train that left Malaga at 6.40pm for Puerta de Atocha in Madrid. Its last three carriages derailed and crossed onto the adjacent track and collided with a train bound for Huelva which also derailed.

An unspecified number of people are trapped. It is known that there were 317 people on the train from Malaga.

Five mobile intensive care units and and four emergency critical care units were sent to the scene.

Spain's transport minister, Oscar Puente, said the impact "was terrible" and caused "the first two carriages of the Renfe train (to Huelva) to be thrown into the air as a result". "The number of victims cannot be confirmed at this time. The most important thing now is to help the victims."

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the government was working with all relevant authorities and emergency services to assist the passengers of the two trains.

Salvador Jiménez, a journalist with Radio Nacional de España (RNE), was on the Malaga train. He was in the first carriage and said the crash felt like "an earthquake". The crew, he explained, immediately used the public address system to ask if there were any medical personnel on the train to help the injured.
