A court in Palma has sentenced a property manager ('finca administrator') to a year and a half in prison for embezzling €50,000 from a community of owners. The woman, appearing via videoconference as she currently lives on the mainland, admitted to the crime and accepted the sentence following a plea agreement reached before the trial began.
The 53-year-old Spanish woman assumed the management of the property - a building on Plaça Orson Welles in Son Gotleu (Palma) - at an extraordinary meeting held in 2014. She was the only person authorised to access the bank account and withdrew €50,000 from the funds in the account.
Owners became suspicious and contacted the National Police. She was arrested for misappropriation in July 2020. Given the agreement between the parties, the judge handed down the sentence at the same hearing last week.
She will not serve the sentence provided she does not reoffend within three years and pays a total of €67,855 in civil damages - the €50,000 that were embezzled plus €17,855 in interest - within 24 months.
