A chilly night with the temperature in parts of Palma around four degrees at midnight didn't deter some 500 or so people from seeing in the New Year at the traditional party in Plaça Cort by the town hall building.

The front of the building was transformed into a tapestry onto which five Christmas baubles were projected. Street sellers did a roaring trade, and Palma Police and the Red Cross were on hand to make sure everyone was safe and taken care of if needed. No incidents were reported.

The bells of the town hall's famous old clock, En Figuera, chimed, the grapes were consumed and wishes were made. The fireworks went off, and then the stage was handed over to the veteran DJ Juan Campos. Himself now something of a New Year tradition in Palma, the ever-popular Juan blasted out hits from yesteryear.
