The main reservoirs supplying Palma, Gorg Blau and Cúber, recorded a much-needed rise in stored water level after a period of significant rainfall and snowfall over Christmas in Mallorca's Serra de Tramuntana. According to figures released on Monday by Emaya, the reservoirs collectively climbed from 36.43% to 39.69% of total capacity during the week ending 29 December.

Snow was particularly prominent on the higher peaks, with snowlines descending to around 900 metres, delivering impressive scenes across the island's mountainous interior. These weather conditions have provided a modest but encouraging boost to water reserves, offering some relief to worries over drought conditions, though current levels remain below seasonal expectations. The hope is that continued rainfall and lower temperatures forecast for early January will help sustain this positive trend.

Cúber experienced a more noticeable improvement, moving from a concerning 29.17% of its storage capacity to 33.03% after recent precipitation, marking a 3.86% week-on-week gain. Despite this, the reservoir remains at just a third of its maximum volume. Gorg Blau also benefitted, increasing by 2.89% to reach 43.9% of its total capacity—still shy of the halfway point.

While these increases mean short-term pressure on water resources in Mallorca has lessened, authorities and local communities remain vigilant. Emaya described the progress as grounds for optimism, but cautioned that "the figures are still a cause for concern for this time of year," underlining the importance of further rainfall to reach more comfortable storage thresholds and ensure long-term supply for the island's largest city and surrounding areas.
