Fallout at Mallorca's tourism department

The departure of the tourism councillor is partly due to a personality clash

There is strong speculation* that the president of the Council of Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, will today announce the departure of the tourism councillor, José Marcial Rodríguez.

Appointed following the Partido Popular's 2023 election win, a rift between Rodríguez and Galmés has become increasingly pronounced over recent months. In part this is put down to a personality clash. Rodríguez, it is said, has a "fiery temperament". But his style plus his experience were reasons why he had appealed to the PP as tourism councillor and for organising a complex department.

It is now being said in PP circles that his management has left much to be desired and has been causing problems.

Issues first surfaced almost a year ago, when an anonymous complaint about Rodríguez was submitted by a group of employees. He was accused of having attempted to assault the head of the inspection service.

The complaint stated: "The councillor arrived one day, as usual shouting and disrespecting the head of the inspection service. One day he threatened him that if he didn't obey, his secondment would not be renewed. Then he raised his hand to hit him. He didn't actually hit him, but many civil servants witnessed it. Many people saw it."

Rodríguez categorically denied these accusations and said that he had suffered media harassment. The complaint was dismissed.

More recently, there was the failure of the system for the purchase of 654 holiday rental accommodation places. Alternative systems were sought, but it was announced a couple of weeks ago that the process for the allocation and sale of these places was on hold indefinitely.

* The announcement was made at Tuesday's meeting of the Council of Mallorca. Guillem Ginard, until now the director-general for culture, is the new tourism councillor.
