Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be the coldest since 2010 in Spain and the Balearics

For most of December, temperatures have been higher than normal, taking the period 1991-2020 as a reference, but, according to information from the Aemet, in the final stretch they will be lower than that average, resulting in the coldest first week of Christmas since 2010 | Photo: Majorca Daily Bulletin reporter

Yes, it’s cold in Mallorca and across the whole of Spain. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be the coldest days in Spain for 24 and 25 December since 2010, according to forecasts by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). For most of December, temperatures have been higher than normal, taking the period 1991-2020 as a reference, but, according to information from the Aemet, in the final stretch they will be lower than that average, resulting in the coldest first week of Christmas since 2010.

The agency points out that a Christmas start as cold as this one in 2025 is unusual in recent years and will become increasingly rare. ‘The first week of Christmas is 2.1ºC warmer than in the mid-20th century. It is not impossible, but it seems very unlikely that we will experience a Christmas as cold as in 1962,’ the agency said on its social media accounts.

Today, Wednesday, will be marked by unstable conditions with cloudy skies and rainfall throughout the mainland and the Balearics, particularly persistent in the Cantabrian Sea and northern Galicia and heavy on the Alboran and Balearic Sea coasts, with snow in mountain areas above 1,000 metres.
On Christmas Day, there will be a clear drop in temperatures, initially marked in the north of the mainland and then moving westwards, all due to the presence of a mass of cold air and a low pressure system to the west of the peninsula, according to the Aemet.

A dozen mainland capitals, including Madrid, will not exceed five degrees. In Segovia and Lugo, the temperature will remain at three degrees. It will rain, perhaps persistently, in the northeast and the Balearics. The rains will spread to other areas in the east and north throughout the day. Despite the warning of this episode of intense cold for the Christmas holidays, for the first time in several days, on Wednesday, the Aemet has not announced any weather warnings on its website for this day in Spain.

For Christmas Day in the Balearics the weather forecast is for cloudy or overcast skies, with rain and showers that could be accompanied by storms and be locally heavy, with the day expected to see the most rainfall. Temperatures will remain largely unchanged, or will rise in the case of night-time temperatures, ranging between 12 and 14 degrees on average, with lows that could be lower in Palma, where they could reach 7 degrees Celsius. The wind will be light, tending to moderate from the northeast, raising the snow level, which is no longer expected in large quantities, beyond the remains that remain on the peaks of the Serra above 1,100-1,200 metres.

Temperatures will rise and are expected to reach highs of between 13 and 15 degrees on Friday 26th, with rainfall and snowfall subsiding, which is not expected to fall in the Serra mountains. The forecast anticipates cloudy intervals with rainfall, subsiding in Mallorca and Menorca in the morning. Temperatures will remain largely unchanged or fall slightly at night, with light to moderate winds from the north.
