A 38-year-old Ecuadorian man was arrested in Barcelona last week in connection with the jewellery robbery in Palma in October which was valued at €973,000.
He fled Mallorca shortly after the robbery, the National Police in Palma having made one arrest; a 51-year-old man, also Ecuadorian, is in custody. A third person remains at large.
The man arrested in Barcelona is said to have around twenty convictions from various courts and to have been arrested in Barcelona five times in recent months. Following his arrest last week, the court released him. Investigators in Palma are, to say the least, surprised by that decision.
Around 4.30pm on October 3, a van driver picked up twelve packages from the Bulgari store on Passeig Born. Security cameras show that the van was followed.
Near C. Bonaire, the driver stopped the van to make a delivery. Two men who had been following the van stole the packages after making a hole in the rear door. The driver didn't realise what had happened until some time later. A grey car picked up the robbers and sped off. The intention had been for 20 pieces of jewellery valued at €973,000 to have been taken to an event in Madrid. The 51-year-old was arrested as he was about to board a flight from Palma to Barcelona.
