Traffic restrictions on the Cap de Formentor will begin 15 days earlier in 2026 and also conclude 15 days sooner, running from May 15th to October 15th, rather than from June 1st until the end of October as implemented this year.
This modification was agreed upon on Wednesday by the Traffic Department (DGT), Pollensa Town Council, the Government Delegation in the Balearics, and the Mallorca Council, to better accommodate visitor flows and prevent congestion, according to an official statement from the island's governing body. Officials from the three responsible administrations met to evaluate this year's access restriction system at Formentor and to establish parameters for 2026.
The decision to bring forward the restriction period by 15 days was requested by Pollensa Town Council, prompted by the notable decrease in activity during the second half of October. The council proposed shifting these 15 days to May, when visitor numbers are substantially higher.
Until last year, vehicle circulation on the Formentor road was prohibited from June 1st to September 30th, but in 2025 this restriction was extended until the end of October. The closure hours will remain 10am to 10pm, and as before, access to Formentor will only be permitted via public transport, on foot, or by bicycle.
Two-tier restriction system
The agreement reinforces a two-level restriction system where only authorised vehicles, public transport, emergency services, and bicycles may circulate. The first level begins at Puerto de Pollensa and extends to Formentor beach, whilst the second runs from Formentor beach to the lighthouse.
During the 2025 restriction period, the DGT issued 2,300 fines to vehicles that disregarded the limitation. This represents approximately 1,000 more infractions than in 2024, despite having an additional month of restrictions.
Penalties are administered by the DGT, as the authority responsible for traffic regulation, and range from 100 to 200 euros.
The Mallorca Council has assumed responsibility for providing information officers in the area to communicate the restrictions to drivers, an initiative with a budget of 137,000 euros for 2026.
