The reception centre shelters for migrants in the port of Palma are now operational, there having been delays for various reasons, such as issues with wastewater.

The facility is where there used to be a vehicle depot. It covers approximately 600 square metres and has a minimum capacity for 136 people. Spain's ministry of inclusion, social security and migration has spent €1.6 million on construction, air-conditioning, and the purchase of necessary equipment and furnishings.

The centre provides medical attention and a place to stay overnight before boarding a ferry for the mainland. Migrants are sent to reception centres under the humanitarian aid programme, though many just continue their migratory journey.

According to the most recent report from Spain's interior ministry, 6,688 migrants arrived in the Balearics on small boats between January and November, an annual increase of 28%. There were 45 arrivals on Monday, 26 of whom had landed at Cala Santanyi.
