Héctor Andrés D., the 31-year-old Colombian national who stabbed his ex-partner several times in the neck at a property in Costitx on Sunday, had previously spent time in prison for the attempted murder of a woman. This was on the Spanish mainland in 2014.
After the attack on Sunday, he attempted to commit suicide. He was initially taken to Inca Hospital but is now in Son Espases, which is where the 35-year-old woman also is. She underwent emergency surgery on Sunday and is reported to be out of danger.
The woman teaches at a school in Es Pil-lari (Palma). On Monday, the school issued a statement condemning the attack and all gender violence.
President Prohens added to the condemnation as did the mayor of Costitx, Antoni Salas: "This is not the Mallorca we want, nor the Mallorca we are used to." For a small municipality of some 1500 people, the attack had come as a great shock.
Costitx and Alaro town halls organised gatherings on Sunday evening to show solidarity for the woman and to express the total rejection of gender violence.
