Last week, the president of the Balearics, Marga Prohens, welcomed the fact that tourism is growing ‘like never before’ during the mid and low season months in the Balearics. She said that this is a ‘change in trend’ brought about by the commitment to cultural and sports tourism, which is allowing the “peaks” in tourist numbers to be ‘shifted from the high season to other months’.

‘We are focusing on culture, we want it to be an attraction for those who visit us beyond the summer months. This strategy is working. Containment in summer, with growth below 1%, and growing like never before in the mid and low season months.

‘We want to lead the transformation of tourism throughout Europe, to be a region that is seen as a success story in sustainability and regenerative tourism. We are, perhaps, the first example of an economy that wants to move forward not from recession or crisis but from success, from a model that generates wealth and employment,’ she said.

And the latest data shows that holiday bookings to the Balearics increased by 37.8% in the past week compared to the same days last year and have risen by 26.7% compared to last week, according to data published on Monday by the Travelgate platform.

The Balearics are the sixth most popular destination in Spain, with 8.4% of bookings, behind Andalusia, Catalonia, the Canary Islands, Madrid and the Valencian Community. According to the data published by the platform, 37.1% of last week’s bookings were made more than 90 days in advance of the holiday, and 12.2% were made between 15 and 30 days in advance.

Last-minute bookings, made the day before or on the day of travel, accounted for 10.7%. Of the bookings made in the last week, couples accounted for just over half of the total, with 51.9%. 48.4% of travellers booked accommodation for between 2 and 5 nights. In terms of markets of origin, domestic tourism predominates among those who have made reservations in the last seven days through Travelgate: Spaniards accounted for 50.5%, followed by the British with 19.2% and Germans with 3.3%.
