The main road in Menorca claimed another fatality on Friday night. One woman lost her life and two other people were injured in a serious traffic accident at kilometre 34 of the main road, near Sa Costa Nova, on the border between the municipalities of Ciutadella and Ferreries. The accident involved two vehicles and a tractor transporting bales of straw on a trailer. It happened around nine o’clock at night when it was already completely dark.
As a result of the impact, one of the cars, an Opel Adam, was overturned on the road, while the other, a Ford Mondeo, suffered severe damage to the front after colliding with the rear of the tractor, according to initial information gathered at the scene of the accident. The victim and a passenger were travelling in the car.
The condition of the latter vehicle required the intervention of the fire brigade to free both the woman, who was worse off, and her passenger, who were trapped inside the passenger compartment.
After the emergency services arrived at the scene, the injured were taken to hospital.
A 39-year-old man who was accompanying the deceased woman was admitted to Mateu Orfila Hospital in serious condition. The 71-year-old woman who was in the Opel Adam was treated at Juaneda Hospital in Ciutadella. The occupants of the tractor were unharmed, according to health sources.
To protect the privacy of the deceased victim, the fire brigade and Ciutadella Local Police covered the vehicle while the body was removed and the hearse was mobilised.
