The Maltese Falcon, owned by Greek-British hedge fund manager Elena Ambrosiadou, has been spotted sailing off the coast of Cala Pi in Mallorca, a fitting setting for one of the world’s most recognisable and technically advanced sailing yachts. At 88 metres in length, it remains among the largest and most innovative sailing superyachts ever constructed. Completed by Perini Navi in Tuzla, Istanbul in 2006, it is famed for its pioneering DynaRig system—three freestanding, rotating carbon-fibre masts that allow the yacht to sail with remarkable efficiency and minimal crew. Its distinctive profile and engineering sophistication continue to draw attention in every port it visits.

The yacht was originally commissioned by American venture capitalist Tom Perkins, who purchased a bare hull built in the early 1990s and transformed it into a groundbreaking project. Working with Dykstra Naval Architects, Perkins revived the 1960s DynaRig concept developed by German engineer Wilhelm Prölss, bringing the idea to life with the help of British carbon-fibre specialists Insensys, Ltd. Under Perkins’ direct supervision, the masts were engineered and constructed, while he personally contributed to the yacht’s advanced sail-control software. The result was a vessel combining historic inspiration with cutting-edge technology.

In 2009, the Maltese Falcon was sold to Greek-British hedge fund manager Elena Ambrosiadou, who continued to operate the vessel both privately and as a high-end charter yacht. In 2022, the yacht was acquired off-market by a new owning company linked to Ambrosiadou, ensuring continuity in its management and upkeep. Under this stewardship, the Maltese Falcon has maintained its reputation as a benchmark of innovation, luxury and maritime engineering.

The interior of the Maltese Falcon is as impressive as its technological achievements. The yacht features an expansive master suite complete with a private gym, dressing room and luxurious bathrooms, including a Jacuzzi. It can accommodate up to 12 guests across five sumptuous cabins, including a VIP suite and four double cabins. Entertainment options are equally refined: a state-of-the-art cinema room with HD projection and premium sound system sits alongside a spectacular outdoor cinema screen for film nights under the stars. Guests also enjoy a first-class gym equipped with modern machines, a dedicated spa area and an on-board masseuse. For adventure seekers, the yacht offers an array of water toys, including windsurfing gear, jet skis and various tenders for exploring the coastline.

Throughout its career, the Maltese Falcon has earned numerous industry accolades, including multiple Perini Navi Cup victories and the Palma Superyacht Cup. It has also captivated audiences with its ability to sail gracefully off its anchor or manoeuvre within tight harbours using its advanced automated systems. Despite occasional incidents, such as a minor collision in 2008, the yacht has remained in immaculate condition. Today, it continues to stand as one of the most iconic and celebrated sailing superyachts ever built—an enduring blend of visionary engineering and luxurious living.
