One of the highest costs of living in Spain and among the lowest paid regions, even the politicians in the Balearics suffer from low pay (relatively speaking).

Spain's finance ministry has released the latest list of salaries paid to regional politicians. President Marga Prohens is on €78,803 gross a year. Her counterpart in Catalonia, Salvador Illa, has an annual salary of €140,257, which makes him (and by a fair distance) the highest paid regional president in the country.

The ministry doesn't have the figure for the president of the Basque Country, but of all the other regions, the pay received by Marga Prohens is greater only than that of the president of Cantabria, María José Sáenz de Buruaga (€71,485). Apart from Salvador Illa, Isabel Díaz Ayuso of Madrid is the only president on six figures (€103,090).

Llorenç Galmés, the president of the Council of Mallorca, earns slightly under 1,000 euros less than the president of the Council of Ibiza. Galmés is on 75,703 euros. Comparisons at a provincial level include the president of the Provincial Council of Vizcaya, whose salary is 122,650 euros.

The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, is way down the pay list. His €65,725 contrasts with €110,688 in Madrid and €105,557 in Barcelona, which are of course far bigger cities. But the likes of Vitoria (€96,016), Marbella (€95,465) and Burgos (€94,555) are not. The mayor of Calvia, Juan Antonio Amengual, earns almost as much as Martínez - €62,128.
