The flagship of the Royal Navy, the aircraft carrier Prince of Wales, made a loud entrance to Gibraltar on Sunday firing a traditional gun salute which was then "answered" by the Gibraltar naval base.

The aircraft carrier, one of the biggest warships in the world and equipped with 24 F35 stealth fighters, is returning to Britain after a seven month deployment to the Pacific. She was accompanied by the destroyer Dauntless and the frigate Richmond, which visited Palma last week. A support vessel arrived later.

The sight of the flagship of the Royal Navy in port was warmly welcomed by the people of Gibraltar. The ships have a combined crew of almost 3,000 men and women.

The Task Group is heading home to Plymouth and Portsmouth after a long deployment to the Pacific. They have visited Australia, Japan, South Korea and India.

The Prince of Wales is the second carrier of the Queen Elizabeth class. Both vessel are due to be in service until 2050.
