The 19-year-old Spanish driver involved in the fatal accident in Palma's Son Castelló Industrial Estate on Saturday morning had been arrested in July for stealing a truck valued at €80,000 from a warehouse in Marratxi. The vehicle was loaded with ten pallets of beverages worth over €10,000.

The Guardia Civil arrested him on that occasion and carried out a search at his home. They found goods that had been stolen from warehouses and a handgun.

These facts were stated when he appeared in court in Palma on Monday. The judge ordered him to be remanded in custody, accused of manslaughter, driving without a licence, falsifying official documents, and leaving the scene of an accident. He maintained in court that he had been driving at an appropriate speed. Witnesses have said he overtook them at high speed.

The car was a stolen rental Peugeot 3008 with altered number plates. It collided head-on with a motorcyclist who was riding in the wrong direction. The motorcyclist, a 27-year-old Argentine man, died instantly. Both the car and the bike caught fire and were destroyed.

The occupants of the car, two men and three women, left the scene of the accident. The driver handed himself in to Palma Police on Sunday. The others also reported to the police.
