Palma City Council has sealed off six commercial premises at number 288 Joan Miró street, near Cala Major, due to imminent collapse risk. The affected building comprises a ground floor hosting five shops and an upper floor with a nightclub.
The emergency operation was triggered when a business owner discovered a substantial crack in their ceiling on Tuesday, promptly alerting local authorities. Palma Local Police, Fire Brigade, and municipal technicians, including building safety department officials, quickly responded to the scene. Following a thorough structural assessment, officials ordered the immediate closure of all premises after identifying serious structural concerns.
The Palma Fire Brigade has implemented temporary structural reinforcements and shoring in several areas to prevent any potential collapse. All affected businesses will remain closed until further notice.
Several affected business owners expressed their concern about the sudden closure. One shopkeeper, Plovdiv, who runs the supermarket, mentioned paying "over 1,000 euros in monthly rent" and awaiting further instructions from property owners regarding necessary measures.
The affected structure, built in 1950, spans 813 square metres across two floors. The ground floor houses five commercial units, while the upper floor contains a well-known disco-pub that has been operating in Cala Major for years.
Local authorities have emphasised the mandatory requirement for building owners to maintain regular technical inspections and proper maintenance to ensure safety standards in both residential and commercial properties.
