According to 2023 Tax Agency figures, 40% of the income of the population of Deia is derived not from salaries or pensions but from business activities, including real estate and the renting-out of properties.
This is the highest percentage in the Balearics and one of the highest percentages in Spain, and Deia is joined by four other Tramuntana municipalities where 25% or more of residents' income comes from the same sources as in Deia - Fornalutx, the second highest (36.2%), Valldemossa, Soller and Escorca. The only municipality not in the Tramuntana where the percentage exceeds 25% is Santanyi (26.4%).
In the Balearics, 19% of the population obtains income in the same way; this is the highest in Spain. In the case of Ibiza and Formentera, the figure rises to 25%. The region that comes closest to the Balearics is Navarre, 14.4%.
On the other side of the coin, Consell is the municipality with the highest percentage of the population on a salary - 67.6% - closely followed by Mancor de la Vall, Marratxi and Inca.
For people on a pension, the Balearics have the lowest population percentage in Spain - 14.5%; the national average is 20.2%. Escorca, with 22.2%, has the highest percentage of people on a pension in Mallorca.
