Pollensa Town Hall says it will have to undertake the removal of three abandoned boats in Pollensa Bay and pay the cost - approximately €50,000.

As well as inaction by owners, who the town hall cannot trace, the "competent authorities" are blamed for their lack of action; the Balearic Government in other words.

The town hall points to the fact that boats, not just the abandoned ones, are unregistered. This prevents identification and exacerbates the problem. This is "illegal occupation that poses a risk to both navigation and bathers, in addition to contributing to the pollution of the bay, which is classified as a Site of Community Interest due to its environmental value".

It is calling for coordinated action to put an end to the situation and reiterates the need to create a regulated ecological buoy field, with the aim of ensuring the protection of the marine environment. "The privilege of a few cannot be a cost to all."

The removal of the boats is part of the latest clean-up organised by the town hall. Professional divers and a waste management company are involved with the removal of items such as concrete blocks and tyres from the seabed. These have been used for illegal anchoring in the bay.
