A 67-year-old German tourist died on Friday when attempting to rescue his wife who was at risk of drowning.
The incident occurred in Son Bauló (Can Picafort) shortly before 6pm. The emergency services were alerted by calls that a couple were in the sea and in difficulty.
A lifeguard from the nearby Concord Hotel rushed to the scene, and several beachgoers helped to get the couple get out of the water.
The lifeguard used a defibrillator in trying to resuscitate the man before paramedics arrived. They spent an hour in the attempt to save his life.
His 47-year-old wife was taken to Muro Hospital in a serious condition.
