The arrival of the American aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford in Palma has provided a significant boost to trade and the taxi sector on the island, according to Pimeco and Taxis-Pimem. Taxi drivers report a considerable increase in journeys during the stay of the US crew, while shopkeepers note a rise in sales both in Palma and in coastal areas and tourist towns such as Valldemossa, Deya and Alcudia.

Carolina Domingo, president of PIMECO and vice-president of PIMEM, stated that “the impact has been felt across the entire island, especially in the more tourist-oriented areas, where souvenir shops have experienced a notable upturn.” Afedeco, meanwhile, said they do not yet have figures on the possible repercussions of the ship’s visit, although they indicated that supermarkets have not noticed any change.

The business associations view the ship’s stopover positively, as it has helped to stimulate economic activity during the low season and to strengthen Mallorca’s image as a welcoming and lively destination.
