On Friday evening, there was a protest in Palma against the USS Gerald R. Ford, which had arrived in the bay earlier on Friday for a five-day stopover.
The protest, only small, was organised by the group Mallorca per la Pau (Mallorca for Peace). For the protesters, the aircraft carrier's presence is symbolic of war, of the threat to peace and of military escalation.
One of the group read a manifesto. This called for "denuclearised islands"; the ship is powered by nuclear reactors.
There was a rejection of NATO and what were said to be its confrontational policies; chants included "no to NATO, bases out".
"Mallorca is a land of peace," they concluded.
