The first sailors from the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford began disembarking in Palma on Friday, kicking off a visit that will run until Wednesday, 8 October. Around 3,000 personnel went ashore in the early hours, spreading across the city centre and tourist hotspots such as Magalluf, where a surge in activity is expected over the coming days.
Among those spotted in central streets such as La Lonja and Jaime III were Yavier from Puerto Rico and Ken from Tennessee. The growing presence of US personnel is already being felt in shops and restaurants, with local businesses anticipating a welcome boost to trade.
From first light, the massive vessel—337 metres long and capable of carrying up to 90 aircraft—was visible in Palma Bay, drawing crowds of curious residents and tourists. A special security operation, coordinated by the National Police and Civil Guard, has been deployed across the city to ensure the visit runs smoothly.
To move the sailors around the island, around twenty coaches have been arranged, with trips to other municipalities also planned. The visit is expected to generate an economic impact of around two million euros, a figure welcomed by the local tourism sector, which sees the stopover as a chance to extend the season.
Regarded as the world’s most technologically advanced warship, the USS Gerald R. Ford’s presence has put Mallorca in the international spotlight, blending military strategy with tourism and economic benefits.
