Cap Pinar is at the tip of the La Victoria peninsula in Alcudia. An idyllic spot, hardly anyone goes there. It is a military zone, off-limits by land and sea, except for guided tours. The military zone extends inland, and Spain's ministry of defence is in the process of expanding it further.

Under a royal decree declaring Cap Pinar an area of national defence interest, the zone is set to increase by 145 hectares.

Alcudia Town Hall fears the plans will be prejudicial to current uses of the La Victoria area. At Thursday's council meeting, there was approval for objections to be lodged with the ministry.

The town hall had been informed that the expansion was in order to provide bases and training camps for the Army, "so that training can be carried out with the utmost guarantee to ensure the missions assigned by the state government".

Concerns the town hall has relate to, among other things, the use of hiking trails and hunting rights. The local hunters' society was granted rights in exchange for land maintenance. A further worry concerns the La Victoria fiestas at the start of July. The town hall will insist that the military plans "do not entail any impediment, restriction, or reduction of the free movement of people in the celebration of local fiestas".

In 2012, the town hall and the ministry signed an agreement under which guided tours open to the public were established. These continue to this day.
