A man has accepted a sentence of three years and one month in prison for gagging a businessman and stealing 83,000 euros at machete-point from his home in Magalluf. The defendant, who pleaded guilty to offences of robbery with intimidation, unlawful detention, and causing injury this Monday at the trial in the Palma Court, has also accepted a fine of five months with a daily rate of seven euros. The defence lawyer, Gaspar Oliver, reached an agreement with the victim’s lawyer, Jaime Campaner, and the Public Prosecutor’s representative, José Díaz Cappa.
The prosecutor took into account the highly mitigating circumstance of reparation of the damage, after the defendant had deposited €60,000 in compensation before the oral hearing. The accused, of Cuban origin, has accepted that he will be expelled from the country once he is released.
The events occurred on 19 December 2019. The assailant, who acted with another man who has not been identified, waited for the victim on the stairs of his building. When he arrived, they gagged him, tied his hands and feet with duct tape, and threatened him with a machete. They then took the businessman to the landing of the attic where he lived, took the keys, and disconnected the alarm. Both robbers threatened to kill him if he did not reveal where the money was, and the victim complied.
The attackers took a backpack containing €83,000, the victim’s mobile phone, the keys to his home, and left the premises. The Calvia Civil Guard launched an investigation after becoming aware of the robbery. The victim had just received the payment for the transfer of ownership of a premises, which is why he was keeping the money in a backpack.
At the beginning of 2025, investigators managed to locate one of the suspects in the United States. The man, who has numerous prior convictions, was living between New York and Miami. DNA samples obtained by the officers enabled the arrest of the offender.
