On Sunday, the Balearic Government reported that it had discovered 1,475 holiday rental properties for which no tourist tax was being paid.

Of these, 570 have now registered for the tax. The others, unless owners can prove there has not been any commercial activity, will automatically be registered.

Cross-referencing of government and island councils' data led to the discovery that these 1,475 properties were registered with councils as holiday rentals - they all have the necessary licence - but were not registered with the government for payment of the tax.

The government says "a further step has been taken in institutional collaboration with the island councils with the aim of improving the management and control of tourist rentals in the Balearics". Tax assessments are made retroactively.

In September 2023, the government's vice-president and finance minister, Antoni Costa, announced that data would be cross-referenced with that of the Council of Mallorca. This was in order to "guarantee transparency and a level playing field among all tourist establishments". "Our goal is to ensure that everyone complies with the same obligations and that the funds raised are used for the well-being of all citizens of the Balearics."
