German tour operator TUI and the joint venture formed by Sercomisa (Trasmapi), ALSA, and Barcos Azules are in the running to operate Palma’s new maritime public transport service, the Palma boat bus, set to start operations next year.
The scheme, led by the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB), aims to link key points within Palma port while offering a sustainable transport alternative. It is designed to improve accessibility, ease road congestion, and strengthen the connection between the port and the city. The initiative forms part of the APB’s wider Mobility Plan, developed alongside the redevelopment of the seafront promenade.
The service will launch with at least three routes and an initial fleet of four low-emission vessels, each able to carry 100 passengers. Main stops will include Maritime Station No. 6 on the West Dock, Poniente Quay, Golondrinas Quay, Portitxol, and the Royal Steps at Lonja Quay. The service will run daily from 7am to 10pm, extending to midnight at weekends.
The Palma boat bus is part of a broader strategy to make the port–city area more accessible and sustainable for pedestrians and cyclists. By integrating maritime transport with other mobility options, the APB hopes to encourage greener travel and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
Alongside the recent introduction of a new circular EMT bus route along the seafront, the initiative signals a shift in public transport for this part of Palma. The changes aim to calm traffic, enhance the urban environment, and reclaim public space for pedestrians.
