The APEAM association of maritime businesses is opposed to the temporary migrant reception centre being located next to the stations in the Port of Palma and is asking the Balearic Ports Authority to find an alternative location for these temporary facilities. "The port cannot be and should not be a place of abandonment or improvisation."
Recognising the "complexity" of migration and the need for a humanitarian response, as well as expressing solidarity with migrants, the association nevertheless rejects the use of strategic facilities for purposes other than those intended. "This compromises the port's reputation, the competitiveness of the sector, and the international image of Mallorca as a leading destination."
In the midst of high season, when Palma receives thousands of ferry and cruise ship passengers daily, the association argues that "the first impression" cannot be one that conveys a negative image.
"The maritime and cruise industry is one of the economic drivers of the Balearic Islands, generating employment and representing a key element in the islands' international projection." It emphasises the importance of regular ferry lines to the "sustainability of the current socioeconomic model".
