Very different to how the fiestas usually are

Some 30,000 people attended Saturday's music event in Palma's Parc de la Mar, a party that was very different to the usually low-key, barely noticeable celebrations for the Mare de Déu de la Salut, the city's summer patron.

Such were the anticipated numbers that the Paseo Marítimo road in front of the park and Cathedral was closed to traffic. The event started at 6pm and finished with a fireworks display at midnight.

The organisers of Magaluf's Mallorca Live Festival, in collaboration with the town hall, staged the event and took care of much of the promotion. 'Patrona', female patron, was a form of branding for the event in the Parc de la Mar and for another music event that was held in Sa Feixina Park on Friday.

Saturday's was the big one, with four acts headed by Canadian DJ/producer BLOND:ISH. The organisers pointed out that three of the acts were female, the one male act having been Danish duo WhoMadeWho.

A backdrop of the Cathedral provided an image of cultural reference. The Mare de Déu de la Salut event is likely to be repeated in future, but this year's is believed to have one eye very firmly on Palma's bid to be European Capital of Culture 2031. Spain is guaranteed to have one of two cities in 2031. Some weeks ago it was suggested that Burgos was the front runner.
