Around 3pm on Saturday, a carriage horse collapsed by the Church of Sant Nicolau in the centre of Palma.

The horse showed signs of exhaustion, raising concern among passers-by. The driver untied the horse and gave it water.

The horse remained on the ground for a few minutes until it was able to get back up with help. There was no immediate veterinary intervention, but the horse will be examined.

Heat may have caused the horse to collapse. The temperature in Palma in mid-afternoon was 32 to 33C. Horse-carriage rides for tourists have to be suspended if there is a yellow alert for heat - 36C.

If heat was the cause, and this seems likely, this will not be the first time a horse has collapsed in Palma because of high temperatures. This is a reason why there has been much clamour for an end to horse-carriage rides.

Elsewhere in Mallorca, Alcudia has successfully phased out horses by introducing electric carriages this summer. Palma Town Hall has said that it will be assessing the Alcudia initiative.
