On Thursday, forty police officers plus specialists in counterfeit detection took part in an operation against the sale of fake goods in Playa de Palma.
More than 20 shops were earmarked for inspection. In the first four to be inspected, around 1,000 counterfeit items were seized. These included bags, t-shirts, dolls, caps, scarves, keychains, towels, and glasses, all of them copies of registered trademarks.
The people running the shops face possible charges for offences against industrial property. As is usually the case with operations of this kind, no arrests were made. The police procedure is to forward reports to the courts to determine potential legal liability.
Investigations are also into those responsible for distributing counterfeit goods to shops.
The Playa de Palma operation follows two separate recent operations led by the Guardia Civil in Can Picafort and Playa de Muro. Legal representatives of leading brands accompanied by officers during these operations. Various individuals are at present being investigated.
