Isolated anti-German incidents continue in Mallorca. On Sunday, several cars with German number plates were scratched in a car park in Santanyi, a town in the south-east of the island with a particularly large German population.
According to a reader who contacted Mallorca Magazin, the incident took place at the Parking Es Pontas, near Cala Santanyí, an area with several well-located restaurants. The reader had gone there with others around 6 pm to eat. When he returned to the car park at 7.10 pm, he found four vehicles with German number plates – including his own – had been deliberately scratched.
“This is such a disgrace, it makes me so angry!” said the affected German, who rents property on the island. “When we are here, we spend all our money in Mallorca – shopping, restaurants, the vet, doctor, petrol station, garage, the beach, beach bars – and then this happens!”
“How much longer are we supposed to put up with this?” he added. He estimated the damage to his own car at between 6,000 and 8,000 euros, and also expressed frustration with the police, claiming they “do nothing. The case is recorded and that’s it!”
In recent weeks, rising local frustration over mass tourism and the presence of German residents has been expressed through anti-German actions. At the beginning of July, anti-German graffiti with slogans such as “Germans out!” appeared in Santanyí.
