The Council of Mallorca held a symbolic flag-raising ceremony in the courtyard of La Misericòrdia in Palma on Friday to mark National Flag Day (23 August) and Ukrainian Independence Day (24 August).
The ceremony was attended by the Vice-President and Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, and the Ukrainian Consul in the Balearics, Volodymyr Nosov.
With this gesture, the island institution wished to express its solidarity with the Ukrainian people and to reaffirm the need for the international community to continue working to achieve peace. The Council of Mallorca has allocated a total of €50,000 for 2025, channelled through the Fons Mallorquí de Solidaritat, to support those affected by the war. The aid has taken the form of cooperation projects in Ukraine and initiatives to facilitate temporary accommodation in Mallorca.
In Ukraine, the resources have enabled the purchase and distribution of food, hygiene products and essential materials for refugees, humanitarian assistance centres and municipal reception centres in the municipalities of Khust and Chernivtsi. The first and second floors of two public buildings in Horinchovo have also been refurbished to provide safe temporary accommodation for displaced persons.
At the same time, the Council is collaborating with the Associació Mallorquina d’Ajuda als Refugiats d’Ucraïna (Amar Ucraïna), which enables children living in conflict zones to stay in Mallorca during the summer, offering them a safe and welcoming environment.
With this action, the island’s government reaffirms its commitment to peace, democracy and human rights, as well as to international cooperation and humanitarian aid. At the same time, it expresses its closeness to those who, far from their homeland, keep their traditions and cultural identity alive at a particularly significant time for Ukraine.
