The Guardia Civil's Seprona division is treating the latest blaze in Albufera as wildland arson.

Firefighters confirmed there were six separate focal points for the fire, which was extinguished around 2.30am on Friday. The damage was limited, the Ibanat nature agency having last night referred to 0.4 hectares caused by two of the six. The final tally has yet to be reported.

Specialist officers from Seprona, which is responsible for investigations into environmental matters, were on the ground in Albufera on Friday morning.

The indications do point to the fires having been started deliberately in an area where incidents are unfortunately all too common and remain unresolved. The vegetation in Albufera is predominantly the very tall reed. Tackling blazes in terms of access isn't generally problematic, but the density of the vegetation can cause fires to spread very rapidly, especially if the breezes are up. Last night there wasn't that much breeze, the area, according to Ibanat, having been on level three alert (out of four) for fire risk.

Firefighting crews from Alcudia, Arta and Inca were all called in.
