According to the latest figures, the Balearic Government's housing agency, IBAVI, has 754 homes to rent in Mallorca municipalities other than Palma. The distribution is very uneven; there are some municipalities which don't have a single public housing unit.
In Mallorca there are 53 municipalities, 52 excluding Palma; 21 of them have no public housing. A further twelve have between one and four homes. More than half of the island, therefore, has little or no public housing.
The best-off municipalities are Inca (186 homes), Sa Pobla (90), and Capdepera (67); three municipalities that account for 45% of all the IBAVI homes to rent. By contrast, the likes of Binissalem, Consell, Mancor de la Vall, Porreres and Soller have barely one home each.
IBAVI will be increasing the public housing stock. Around 900 new homes across the islands are planned, of which more than 300 will be located in the 52 Mallorca municipalities. These include Soller and Pollença as well as Capdepera and Sa Pobla, which are already relatively well blessed with public housing.
The government's intention is to provide more public housing, but it is working from a low base, the consequence of previous lack of investment.
