A 65-year-old man has died while swimming at the small Buguenvil·lia beach in Cas Catala, Calvia. At present, it is not known whether he was a local resident or a tourist visiting the island. Despite the best efforts of bystanders and emergency services, he could not be saved.
The incident occurred at around 2.30pm when a lifeguard spotted the man floating in the water. The lifeguard immediately went to his aid, but by the time he was pulled ashore, the victim was no longer breathing.
Initial reports suggest the man may have suffered a sudden medical episode that led to drowning, though this has not yet been confirmed. Those present on the beach began cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately in a desperate attempt to save him.
Paramedics from the 061 emergency service arrived shortly afterwards to continue life-saving efforts. Officers from the Calvia Local Police also attended the scene.
In the end, the medical team could do no more than formally declare the man dead. Further details have yet to be released.
