Mallorca restaurants picked up in July but still with lower spending

Expectations for August are "good"

Mallorca's restaurants, which have been highlighting lower spending this summer, had a better second half of July.

Juanmi Ferrer, president of the CAEB Restaurants Association, says the season began to pick up in almost all areas of Mallorca from mid-July. "The expectations for August are good, but we'll have to see how things go. We are still reeling from a bad May weather-wise and a lacklustre June."

Although there are more customers, Ferrer adds that spending is lower than last year. As was the case back in June 2024, when the restaurants first pointed to a drop in spending following what had been two bumper seasons, Ferrer is again noting a slowdown during the week "as well as a decrease in average bills per table".

Average spending per table has fallen between 8% and 10%, but Ferrer accepts that "not all areas are affected equally, nor are all businesses".

The lower spending is once more attributed to the increased prices for accommodation and flights. "Holiday packages have become more expensive, and there's less money to spend in our sector. Customers haven't changed. They have the same resources, but they're forced to spend 20%-25% more on the air-hotel package, leaving them with less money to spend on food, shopping, and excursions."
