A daring robbery took place on Thursday afternoon in the Cala en Blanes urbanisation, Menorca, and has so far been labelled the most significant theft of the summer. The National Police in Ciutadella, with support from the Local Police, officers from other municipalities on the island, and the Guardia Civil, have launched an extensive search for three suspects believed to be behind the incident.
The theft happened between 2 and 3 pm as a security guard was carrying out a routine cash collection from an ATM installed on the exterior wall of a supermarket on Carrer de Ses Savines. At the time of the incident, the guard was handling a sum of around 50,000€. Fortunately, he was not harmed during the robbery, and his employer has confirmed he is in good health, although no further details about the circumstances have been made public.
After making off with the cash, the three individuals escaped in a white Renault vehicle, leaving the scene at speed in the direction of Ciutadella. Their swift getaway and the time of day — when the area was relatively quiet — made it more difficult for anyone to witness the act or raise the alarm.
Businesses in the immediate vicinity were reportedly unaware that a robbery had taken place. According to sources, the thieves seized the moment when the guard briefly set the money bag down — either while dealing with the machine or heading towards his company vehicle parked nearby — to grab it and flee the scene.
Investigators have collected security footage from cameras inside the supermarket, although they primarily record interior activity and not the exterior area where the robbery occurred. Roadblocks and vehicle checks were set up at various access points around Ciutadella throughout Thursday afternoon, but no arrests have yet been made. The investigation remains ongoing.
