On Thursday, Santa Margalida Town Hall opened a fully equipped camping area for motorhomes and caravans. On municipal land in Son Serra de Marina, it has water supply, wastewater disposal, electricity connection and security cameras.
The town hall delegate for Son Serra, Aina Maria Rodríguez, explained that the area has 21 spaces, with the possibility of adding a further two. The area is to be managed using an app for making reservations and payments (16 euros a night). Length of stays will be controlled; a maximum of ten consecutive nights.
Rodríguez said this system will initially operate for a one-year trial. Revenue will go to the town hall, which will have responsibility for maintenance. "We wanted to offer an organised, safe and regulated alternative for a tourism model that continues to grow."
The creation of the camp followed a November 2023 ban on the parking of large vehicles in Son Serra and in Can Picafort. There had been numerous complaints about the number of motorhomes and caravans during the summer.
Caravanning associations in Mallorca have welcomed the development. Representatives attended the opening and urged other town halls to follow Santa Margalida's example. Certain municipalities - Calvia, Escorca, Pollensa and Sineu - are in fact examining possibilities.
In May, Santa Margalida's neighbour, Muro, opened a similar facility. For up to thirty vehicles, the Muro camp is free and doesn't have a booking system. Unlike Santa Margalida's, which is not far from the beach in Son Serra, it is in the village of Muro, some distance from Playa de Muro.
